Population of the Universe:

None. It is known that there are an infinite number of worlds, but that not everyone is
inhabited. Therefore there must be a finite number of inhabited worlds. Any finite number
divided by infinity is as near to nothing as makes the odds. So, if every planet in the
universe has a population of zero, then the entire population of the universe must also be
zero, and any people you may actually meet from time to time are merely the products of
a deranged imagination.

I look at the clock.
There are numbers there.
Could I have really stayed up past 2?
Or is it another illusion?
I write my poetry.
And my stories.
They are filled with anger and hate,
And I know this cannot be good.
I think about you.
Are you home by the fire?
Are you stuck in the rain?
Are you standing outside my house,
Hoping I?ll happen to come to the door?
I look out the window,
Towards the corner,
Where there?s a neat phone booth,
Like you might see in a black and white movie.
Rain is coming down,
Like nothing I?ve ever seen.
Is this what they call a storm?
Or maybe just imagination?
I hear the thunder.
I shiver and pull on a sweater,
That someone seemed to lie,
Carelessly by my chair.
I wonder who it was.
I look at the clock.
I look at the telephone.
I wish you would call.
I wish I could sleep.
I wish I knew where you were,
And that everything was okay.
And maybe, that your thinking of me.
I type a word, not caring what it is.
It?s just a word.
A simply word,
Made of symbols.
They don?t talk,
They don?t mean a thing,
And yet, I wonder.
I wonder what this word might be.
It eats at my soul to look.
To see what it is my careless hands,
Have written on their own.
I read the word.
